WHO IS ERNEST HEMINGWAY?

In a 2021 Esquire article, Adrienne Westerfield relates how founding editor Arnold Gingrich secured the services of Ernest Hemingway as a contributor to the new magazine. By 1932, Hemingway had already published two successful novels, “The Sun Also Rises” (1926) and “A Farewell to Arms (1929). After running into the author at a New York bookstore, Gingrich saw great potential for the magazine with Hemingway on board, not only for his writing talent but also for his reputation as a “manly man.” He persuaded Hemingway to contribute articles that would help make Esquire “be to the American male what Vogue is to the female.” Hemingway was promised that his contributions would be published “as is”, with “no monkey business en route to the printers.” After the success of the first edition, the relationship continued to blossom and benefit both parties, resulting in Hemingway’s fiction and nonfiction appearing in 28 of Esquire’s first 33 issues.

Esquire Classic devotes a page to Ernest Hemingway and other famous contributors. Click on the “Contributors” heading at the top of the page to see more famous names.

Sarah bet $5,198 and finished with $10,398.

Jeff bet $2,801, finishing with $13,401.

Sadie bet $7,801 and won the game with $21,201, so the next stop for Sadie Goldberger is the Finals with one last chance to get in on the 2022 Tournament of Champions.
